“The Book of Paul” is an unconventional novel in this genre because it treats the heart of the book’s subject matter with flippancy. Between torturing young Martin to make him strong, and then later torturing Rose in order to control Martin, THE BOOK OF PAUL gradually invites the reader into a world of pain, incest, and Being John Malkovich-type mythos.Īuthor Richard Long has an excellent sense of narrative drive and timing. The problem: Martin’s “father” Paul is a sadist, a torturer, and hell-bent on finding a new human vessel in which he can reincarnate.

Martin, a hale, hearty young man, falls in lust/love with Rose, a young professional piercer who is as ornamented with nipple rings as her clientele. THE BOOK OF PAUL is a strange medley of mythology, religious prophecy, and modern-day torture porn, told with a faint sneer. The appeal of mythology is both in the intricacy of the layering and the craft of how these layers are revealed.
